Behind the bling at DeGem

JEWELLERY is more than just diamond and gold. It’s art,” says marketing manager for DeGem, Au Yeong Siew Pheng. Behind her sat the professional gem setter, whose forehead glinted with sweat as he filled in the tiny niches of a gold bangle with diamonds with a tweezer built for this purpose. Less than one millimetre in size, these gems were hard to handle – setting them required a microscope, the concentration of a skilled marksman and perfect eyesight. Even for someone with decade-long experience, it’s still a long and laborious process. At the end of the day, Mr. Gem Setter – who, with his 10 year experience, is a veteran in his profession – set no more than 100 gems. The final result, which would be no less than spectacular, would end up on some discerning tai-tai’s arm. Organised recently by DeGem on the bustling concourse of One Utama Shopping Mall, this live demonstration offered members of the press a glimpse behind the glitz and glamour of fine jewellery and the savoir faire that goes into pieces that are one-of-a-kind.
